Minimum-Wage Foes Tripped Up by Facts |
-13 |
2016-12-07 00:00:00 |
How else can we explain why even before minimum-wage increases went into effect the critics were already assigning blame for rising unemployment?
But so far the early data continues to confirm the work of Krueger and Card: Minimum-wage increases are not the automatic job killers depicted by their opponents.
The two economists looked at employment in the fast-food industry when minimum wages were raised in one market but not in the adjacent market.
Many subsequent studies confirmed their findings -- modest increases in minimum wages don’t lead to job losses.
The modern minimum-wage debate traces back to the seminal 1993 research by Alan Krueger and David Card. |

'Walmart destroyed retail' |
-7 |
2016-08-15 00:00:00 |
"Walmart destroyed retail," retail consultant Jan Kniffen said on Monday on CNBC.
The root of the problem, according to Kniffen, is that there are simply too many physical retail stores in the US.
1 in the retail industry today is Amazon, but the biggest threat as we know it didn't begin with the internet.
Today, there are more than 5,000 Walmart and Sam's Club locations in the US alone.
"As Walmart beat out other discount retailers like Gold Circle in 1988 and Venture Stores in 1998, the company expanded rapidly across the country. |

"Based on a national sample of Walmart stores and distribution centers as of the beginning of 2005, Walmart had filed assessment challenges at more than one-third of its facilities around the country.
"Lawyers for the big box stores argue that operating stores should be assessed like similar-sized stores that have closed down.
Good Jobs First estimated that Walmart had filed more than 2,100 property tax challenges nationwide.
