Related: The dangers of E. coli explainedThe stock, once a Wall Street darling thanks to quarter after quarter of strong sales growth, is down 27% this year.
The CDC also said there was one new E. coli case reported that was related to the original outbreak.
But at least one Wall Street analyst is defending the company and thinks that all the bad news is already priced into the stock.
"Chipotle has taken several steps since late October to identify the source of the E. coli bacteria.
The longer that E. coli remains in the headlines, the more difficult it may become for Chipotle to win back customers. |

But after the CDC announced four new E. coli cases linked to Chipotle, comparable sales fell by about 22%.
"Future sales trends may be significantly influenced by further developments, including potential additional announcements from federal and state health authorities.

Six Chipotle locations were linked to the outbreak and the chain chose to close 43 of its locations in the two states.
Chipotle's stock fell as much as 5% after the stock market opened on Monday.
But the greater risk is that the scare will keep customers away from Chipotle restaurants in other states too.
Chipotle temporarily closed dozens of its restaurants in Washington and Oregon to help stem the damage from an E. coli scare.
Sales at Chipotle restaurants open for at least a year -- called same store sales -- rose only 2.6% in the quarter, their lowest point in two years. |

Ironically enough, Jack in the Box is infamous for being the source of the worst E. coli outbreak at a restaurant chain ever.
Fortunately, none of the Chipotle E. coli cases have been as serious -- although 20 of the 52 people who became ill were hospitalized.
So any future hit to Chipotle's sales may depend on just how many more cases are reported.
The CDC said that "a common meal item or ingredient served at Chipotle Mexican Grill restaurants in several states is a likely source of this outbreak.

A national outbreak of E coli has been linked to Denver-based Chipotle, which has said that it is adopting stricter food safety standards.
At one point the stock was down more than 6% in premarket, its lowest point in more than a year. |

CHICAGO Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG.N), under scrutiny for months over outbreaks of foodborne illness linked to its restaurants across several U.S. states, was sued on Friday for allegedly misleading investors about its food safety controls.
The lawsuit seeks damages on behalf of investors who acquired Chipotle shares from February 2015 to January 2016.
As a result, the company's stock price has been battered by the outbreaks of foodborne illnesses linked to its stores, the lawsuit said.
In a filing on Wednesday, Chipotle said same-restaurant sales for December were down 30 percent. |

The challenge on the food safety front is that the reason a lot of those preservatives are added or processes used is to improve the shelf life and help with food safety.
The chain is closing all its restaurants for several hours on Feb. 8 for a food safety meeting.
The Huffington Post recently spoke with Lusk about how Chipotle has handled its food safety crisis -- and what it could mean for the industry going forward.
It’s a bit hard to be really proactive when you don’t know what the source of the problem is.
It seems more and more food companies will be dealing with that trade-off, as they are also incorporating more fresh and local foods. |

He is being hired to "further our food safety efforts and continue the progress we have already made towards establishing Chipotle as a leader in food safety," the company said in a statement.
The disappointing numbers from Chipotle underscore just how long it takes a chain to live down the stigma of food safety issues, Chapman says.
To address concerns about the safety of its food, the company also announced it is hiring Dr. James Marsden to serve as Executive Director of Food Safety. |

Chipotle accused of ripping off Tasty Burger |

Tasty Burger, which has six locations on the East Coast, claims Chipotle deliberately copied its concept for the launch of a new burger chain, which Chipotle is calling Tasty Made.
""This has caused a great deal of confusion among our customers, and consumers in general, because Tasty Burger has no association or affiliation with Chipotle," Dubois said.
A small burger chain based in Boston is accusing Chipotle of ripping off its name and logo.
He said Tasty Burger has trademark registrations for its name in the US and 37 other countries.

Considering the unlikelihood that the fired Chipotle workers will simply leave, "the question is whether they will be driven further underground," says Singer.
But advocates of comprehensive reform like to point out that few, if any, of the fired Chipotle workers seem to be giving up on the idea of U.S. employment.
According to a report from Goldman Sachs, Chipotle executives said in March that the replacement workers in Minnesota actually came cheaper than the fired workers because they had no seniority.
"Politicians often talk about the need to bring undocumented workers "out of the shadows," but in many ways the Chipotle workers were already halfway out, working "on the front lines, facing the public," says Audrey Singer, a demographer with the Brookings Institution.

USA TODAYChipotle stores will be temporarily closed Monday while the company holds an all-staff meeting on food safety.
Chipotle, the fast-casual Mexican food chain, is closed until 3 p.m. for a companywide safety briefing after outbreaks of norovirus and E. coli sickened customers last year.
Investigators were unable to determine what food caused it, and neither was Chipotle, according to excerpts from Moran's remarks at the staff meeting.
A federal investigation into the E. coli outbreak was officially closed last week when the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that it appears to be over.
Chipotle will be shutting down all of its stores across the U.S. on Monday throughout the entire lunch rush to hold a company-wide meeting about its recent E.coli crisis. |
