At first, Mr. McClendon and his lawyers expressed indignant disagreement with the indictment, although Mr. McClendon did not expressly deny that there had been discussions with a competitor.
“He was always looking for worlds to conquer,” said Melvin Moran, an Oklahoma oil executive who knew Mr. McClendon for years.
“The charge that has been filed against me today is wrong and unprecedented,” Mr. McClendon said in statement released Tuesday night.
Billions of dollars were invested in import terminals that would receive liquefied natural gas from Qatar and other gas-producing countries.
Even in a business known for bigger-than-life executives, Mr. McClendon was a mythical character. |

As CEO of Oklahoma City-based Chesapeake Energy, McClendon was often the face of this boom, turning the company he formed in 1989 into the second-largest natural gas producer in the U.S.

Aubrey McClendon, the former CEO of Chesapeake Energy who was charged Tuesday with rigging bids for oil and natural-gas leases, has died in a car crash in Oklahoma City, police said Wednesday.
The news agency reported McClendon traded on the same oil and gas commodities his company produced, which would have given him insider knowledge of the market.
The crash occurred just after 9 a.m. Wednesday when McClendon’s car sped into the wall of an overpass bridge.
McClendon was a major proponent of fracking, a process that built his company into one of the largest sources of U.S. gas.
“He pretty much drove straight into the wall,” Captain Paco Balderrama of the Oklahoma City Police Department said at a news conference. |

Former Chesapeake Energy CEO Aubrey McClendon was indicted Tuesday on federal charges of conspiring to rig bids for oil and natural gas leases.
The indictment, filed Tuesday in Oklahoma, alleges that McClendon led a conspiracy between two companies not to bid against one another for purchases of some leases in Oklahoma.
The leases give a company the right to draw oil and natural gas from the land for a certain period of time.
"His actions put company profits ahead of the interests of leaseholders entitled to competitive bids for oil and gas rights on their land.
The companies are accused of deciding who would win the bids, then giving an interest in the leases to the other company. |

Chesapeake Energy to face racketeering charges in Michigan trial |

REUTERS/Rebecca CookNatural gas and oil producer Chesapeake Energy Corp (CHK.N) must face trial on charges of felony racketeering and using false pretenses related to its land-leasing practices, a state judge has ruled.
In a statement, Chesapeake said it believes the charges are without merit and expects to prevail at trial.
Chesapeake will also go on trial in Michigan on antitrust charges for its alleged role in bid-rigging at a state land auction in 2010, following an earlier ruling by Barton in July.
As a result, Chesapeake obtained "uncompensated land options from these landowners by false pretenses, and prevented competitors from leasing the land," the state charged.
The 20 counts of using false pretenses are punishable by fines of $10,000 for each count, or triple the value of the money or property involved, whichever is greater. |

Chesapeake Energy charged with alleged fraud, racketeering |

2014-06-05 00:00:00 |
Michigan's attorney general filed felony racketeering and fraud claims against Chesapeake Energy on Thursday, alleging the company canceled hundreds of private land leases under false pretenses following a short-lived oil and gas boom in the state in 2010.
"I will defend and protect the taxpayers of Michigan in the face of fraudulent business practices," Michigan Attorney General Bill Shuette said in a press release.
Landowners were previously told the mortgages were not a problem, the state alleged.
The charges, filed in Michigan state court in Cheboygan, allege Chesapeake, through its leasing agents, victimized private landowners in northern Michigan by falsely claiming mortgages on their properties were a legitimate basis for the lease cancellations.
"Scamming hardworking Michigan citizens is not how we do business in this state. |
